Get to Know the Team at VCO

June 4, 2020

Vera Causa Opera is made up of an amazing team of inspiring, passionate individuals, who work together to bring the community accessible opera performances for all.

Throughout the summer, we'd like to showcase the team members and what they do for VCO.

First up, let's get to know Emma Wiechers, our Social Media Coordinator!

Tell us about yourself!

I am a lover of the arts! I am currently studying Global and International Studies at Carleton University, where I will be starting my third year in the fall. I used to be a musical theatre performer, so singing, dancing, and acting have been a part of my life since I was little. I’m also a big sports fan! That’s right, I love the arts and sports, so I guess you could say that I’m like the female version of Troy Bolton from High School Musical.

How long have you been a part of opera performances, and/or how long have you been with VCO?

This is my first time interacting with opera, and I have been a part of the VCO team since the fall of 2019.

What was it about VCO that made you want to be a part of it?

I had never encountered an organization like VCO before, and what struck me was their positivity and passion for making arts accessible to all people. Though I did not have experience with opera necessarily, I believed in their mission. I was lucky in that I worked as a summer student for Cambridge & North Dumfries Community Foundation (CNDCF) last summer and Dylan had an office for VCO in the same building. I got to learn more about VCO during my time as a summer student, so when they needed someone to run their social media platforms, I was happy to assist!

What are three words to describe VCO?

Inclusive

Positive

Community

What aspect of being the social media coordinator do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy getting to be creative with the different kinds of posts that VCO puts on its social media platforms. Since we are currently living in a pandemic, our community cannot get together in person to enjoy a live production. However, getting to create engaging, unique social media posts during this time, alongside Content Coordinator Breanna Lalonde, has been challenging yet rewarding. Interacting with our audience through our social media platforms has also been exciting, especially as of recently due to COVID. I can tell that our audience is craving the arts in their lives and I’m appreciative of their continued support of VCO and the fact that they’re looking forward to our upcoming season, when we can all be together.

What do you hope to see from VCO in the future?

I’m excited to see how VCO continues to engage with the community through their shows, but also with other community events and initiatives. VCO is a huge advocate for supporting local, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they continue to build partnerships and relationships within the community.

Thanks for all the incredible work you do for VCO, Emma! Check back in July to see our next team member highlight.
