We are so lucky to have Allison Walmsley as a Vera Causa Opera veteran! She played Luna in Julijana Hajdinjak's Padajuća Zvijezda and Cate in Dylann Miller's The Covenant during last season's Canadian Opera Fest, and also starred as Anna in our recent production of The Fairies by Puccini. Allison is one of Vera Causa Opera's two amazing featured artists for the 2018/2019 season. Check out this interview with Allison to learn more about this hard-working and hugely talented soprano!
Tell us about how you came to find yourself in the world of opera.
After singing in the Saskatoon Children’s Choir for ten years, classical music became such an essential part of my life. I couldn’t imagine pursuing anything else, and solo singing and opera was the logical projection for me. Opera is the medium in which I feel most authentic in expressing inner truths and sharing important stories.
What is your favourite role you have sung so far?
My favourite opera role I have sung so far is Emily in Our Town. It’s based off the play by Thornton Wilder, and I think its message will stay with me forever: “Does anybody ever realize life while they live it? Every Minute of it? Every Moment of it? Oh Earth, you are too magical for anyone to know your miracle.” Life and the people you love are pretty precious!
What is your dream role?
Maybe one day (in a galaxy far away!) I will get to sing Lucia in Lucia di Lamermoor by Donizetti. Ever since seeing Diva Plava Laguna’s rendition of Lucia’s final aria in the Fifth Element when I was 5 years old, I was hooked!
What do you like to do when you are not singing?
I love cooking, yoga, running, and, unfortunately for my bank account, I also love shopping!
Give us a fun fact about yourself.
I absolutely adore sunshine! In the summer you can often find me taking naps in the sun in the backyard or hanging out at Woodbine Beach.
What do you like about Vera Causa Opera?
I love working with the people I’ve met with Vera Causa! Some are old friends and others I’ve just met, but we all have music in common. Also, I think the orchestra is pretty great! It’s such a treat to sing with them.
What are you most looking forward to for the rest of the 2018/2019 season?
I’m very much looking forward to Dracula and Elixir of Love with Vera Causa! It’s going to be a blast. I’m also really looking forward to a good long family visit to my home town Saskatoon in May.
Catch Allison as Mina Seward in Dracula this February. It is a performance you will not want to miss!
