Get to Know the Team at VCO

Vera Causa Opera is made up of an amazing team of inspiring, passionate individuals, who work together to bring the community accessible opera performances for all.

Throughout the summer, we'd like to showcase the team members and what they do for VCO.

It's time to get to know our Community Project Manager, Roland Kessler!

What was it about VCO that made you want to be a part of it?

First, it was simply the opportunity to sing with an open and welcoming group! After that, it didn’t take long to become invested in what we do. The impact of VCO is further reaching than it may seem. Providing paid, performance opportunities to young musicians launches careers and helps to put Canadian talent on the main stage of the world.

What inspired you to become a part of opera performances?

Long story short - I began taking voice lessons in 2018 to improve the original folk music I was writing. After a few months, my teacher suggested we look at some traditional folk songs with voice and piano. Looking through the repertoire lists, I was surprised to find many German songs and Lieder that I was raised on! That was my gateway drug, the rest is history.

How long have you been a part of opera performances, and/or how long have you been with VCO?

The answer to this is the same - since the beginning of our 2019 season! VCO has been a great first experience.

What has been your favourite memory/experience with VCO?

Overall, VCO succeeds solely as a team. There’s no words to describe when the musicians nail a piece of music after grinding it out in rehearsals. Or, when the tech crew hits a sick lighting transition. Or, when someone comes up with a unique idea or solution to a problem. The payoff of this teamwork makes being involved at any level worthwhile.

What are three words to describe VCO?

Vera. Causa. Opera. Just kidding - trying to avoid cliche, I would say ‘impactful, fun, meaningful’.

What is your biggest takeaway from being a part of VCO performances?

Opera doesn’t have to be stuffy.

With the upcoming season approaching soon, what are you most excited to experience as a new member of the VCO team?

Excited to spread more Vera Causa through the Waterloo Region, excited for our ambitious performances, excited to meet new cast members and make music with our stalwarts! Overall, excited to learn.

Thanks for all the incredible work you do for VCO, Roland! Check back in August to see our next team member highlight.
