VERA CAUSA OPERA HISTORY
We've Come a Long Way
Before it was Vera Causa Opera, it was a single Canadian Opera premiere. In an interview with Schmopera, Artistic Director Dylan Langan recounted:
"I first got the idea for VCO when I wrote my first opera, Rise of the Roaches. I had been continually hearing about how students were not getting opportunities in the school operas, and so I wanted to write a fun opera that everyone could understand, and enjoy being a part of. There were no avenues to have the opera premiered. So we decided to get a band of students together (9 leads, full chorus, orchestra) and make the premiere a reality. That was one of the most positive rehearsal and performance experiences I’ve ever had. It proved to me that not only could we present new, enjoyable, and accessible opera, but we could have a blast doing it!"
After the successful pilot in 2014/2015, Vera Causa Opera was officially founded by The Langan Family in 2015/2016. The year included their first complete season of two productions, with three operas having been performed in total.
VCO's first-ever season in the Waterloo Region was a smash hit. Pretty soon, people on both sides of the curtain were talking. Performers had a professional, welcoming, and fun environment in which to gain much-needed experience for their resumes. Patrons were loving these $10 operas. Things would continue to grow in 2016/2017.
Vera Causa Opera's second season returned to opera's roots, presenting two timeless operas. VCO had grown again, now including a 20-piece orchestra in their productions, and having full-houses at each show.
In its third season, Vera Causa Opera presented four full productions, five total operas, with each opera showing in both Cambridge and Waterloo. The orchestra was now 30 pieces large, and a small community chorus had emerged.
